This Art print feature Jefferson Market - one of the well known and exquisite landmarks in Greenwich Village. It was build around 1875-77 in a Victorian Gothic style and for a long time served the community as a courthouse. Civil and Police court were occupying two floors and basement was used as a holding area for prisoners on a way to trial or back to jail. In 1945, after court was moved out of Jefferson Market different agencies were occupying it, including Police Academy . Group departed around 1958, building was abandoned and city officials were considering to knock it down. Village Community members stepped in and saved Jefferson Market, that was renovated and later converted into Branch of New York Public Library.
