Times Square

New York City's celebration of New Year and Christmas Holidays are closely associated with Times Square and the area around it, but not with the snow.

In February 2006, the East Coast was hit by a blizzard that brought record breaking snowfall to New York City, 26.9 inches. It was literally the largest amount of snowfall ever recorded for the City. We were right there in Times Square to capture this rare event. Just take a look at one of our pictures: "Blizzard on Times Square." It's really amazing how different Times Square looks after a snowfall, especially one as grand as the 2006 northeaster.

The iconic intersection of Broadway and Seventh Ave, known as Time Square, is located in the dead center of New York City. Known for its busy streets, theaters & music halls, luxurious hotels, first class shopping, dining, and of course the menagerie of enormous electronic billboards. The magnificent Times Square has truly become the heart of the City that never sleeps.

Previously called Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed after the former offices of The New York Times at One Times Square: The Times Building. The area was originally farm land that was sold off by wealthy businessmen, primary John Astor, to commercial businesses. Throughout the years, the area has bounced back and forth between having a bad reputation and being "cleaned up," but always stayed true to its roots of entertainment and commerce.

In 1980, new legislation was put into place in an attempt by businesses and city officials to restore the Square back to the premier theater district it was during WWI. The true sign of turn-around for the district was when Disney opened a store there. Now with the "Disneyfication" process nearly complete, the Square has definitely become much more wholesome.

Each year, Times Square welcomes an estimated 26 million visitors each year. In light of this, businesses have opened many new tourist attractions. Therefore, Times Square is definitely a must-have stop for either your New York Christmas experience, or throughout any time of the year.

The first New Year's Eve celebration at Times Square took place in 1904. It involved a fireworks display in honor of the new Times headquarters, and began a tradition that has lasted over a century. The first New Year's ceremony actually involving a ball lowering from a pole atop the Times Building was held in 1907. Now, this annual Times Square New Year event draws an estimated one million people from far and wide, as billions more watch the festivities from all around the world.
